Those of you old enough to remember may recall a 1960s ‘cult’ TV series produced by ABC Television (later Thames Television) and which was shown on the ITV channel. That series was of course ‘The Avengers’ and starred, among others, Patrick Macnee (John Steed) and at various stages through the six series that were produced Honor Blackman (Cathy Gale), Diana Rigg (Emma Peel) and Linda Thorson (Tara King).
Andy G1HBE was watching an episode called ‘All Done With Mirrors’ from series six when, much to his surprise (and mine too when he told me - thanks Andy) he spotted a TW Communicator with its matching power supply being ‘used’ in one of the scenes (see image below left).
Tom Withers and I are convinced that someone in the production team must have had some knowledge of amateur radio and a sense of humour because one of the characters in this particular episode was ‘Colonel Withers’. That is just too much to be a coincidence, but I guess we will never know !
My attention was also drawn by Malcolm G3VNQ NM9J to an earlier episode of ‘The Avengers’ called ‘Never, never say die’ from series five in which a TW Communicator (probably the same one) appears along with some other familiar radios (see image below right).
Episodes of ‘The Avengers‘ appear on various TV channels from time to time but they are also available on DVDs produced and distributed by STUDIOCANAL.
